![]() Software development firms produce lousy hardware. ![]() Here's where we get to another rule of thumb: Hardware manufacturers write lousy software. The printer driver is made by the manufacturer of the printer how hard can it be for them to get it right?! They of all people should know how to make it all work! So it makes rather more sense to put the page processing logic in the driver (cheaper) and drip-feed the data as the printer is going along. Now, an inkjet printer is only capable of printing one pass of the printhead (maybe 0.5cm or so) at a time. Another limitation - well, a truism, if you like - is that software (drivers) is cheaper than hardware (logic in the printer itself). This is a limitation of how Postscript works there isn't a way around this. But not everything is a half-decent laser printer.įundamentally, anything that's processing Postscript needs to process the entire page before it can even start to put anything on paper. Why doesn't the printer just speak Postscript? In any event, PDF is very similar to Postscript in many ways so we'll just discuss Postscript for now) and the print driver converts this to something the printer can make sense of. Instead, what happens is the OS generates a standardised image (this is a PDF in OS X it's Postscript in most other Unixen. Printers don't have a standardised image input.
